When I Was a Kid, I Got An Orange For Christmas. Today’s Kids Get iPads.
Okay, I might be exaggerating a little bit. BUT my family never seemed to have a ton of money. When the Cabbage Patch craze took over in 1983, my parents did not have the money for the doll.
She went to a local seamstress, who handmade me a doll. When I was 5 years old, I knew getting mad would only make my mom mad. She had a bad temper, and I didn’t want to upset her. So I acted happy about the doll, but I wasn’t. I put it in my toy box and forgot about it. When the kids at school asked what I got for Christmas, I lied and said I got a Cabbage Patch doll so I would fit in.
Looking back now, it is really sad. I feel bad for that little girl.
Forty years later, kid’s gift expectations are now sky high. I don’t know how parents of younger children are dealing with the delulu (delusional gift lists) such as pricey skin care and designer clothing.
I don’t recall my son asking for anything that expensive growing up. It was more he wanted LEGO’s and maybe the latest video game.
