The Holidays Mean Nothing If People Disregard You The Other 364 Days Of The Year

Ihave a sad story but one with a good lesson for everyone today. It’s a good holiday PSA to keep in mind. I think a lot of you will be able to relate to this story- one way or the other.

It was 1985 and my mom had two small children at home, me and my sister. She and my dad fought, a lot. She suffered from depression, especially during the dark, cold winter months.

My sister and I did everything we could to cheer her up, making homemade paper snowflakes, and being extra well-behaved. We knew Christmas was stressing her out. We kept our Santa wishlists very small and reasonable. We would decorate the Christmas tree ourselves.

We did everything we could to help her. And we knew her in-laws did not like her. We knew they did not spend time with her, the rest of the year.

She would bust her a__ cooking and getting the house ready every December. It usually put her in a really bad mood. We knew it was because she didn’t want the extra stress.

But what we didn’t realize as kids, until later, was she resented having to entertain people, family members, who didn’t give a crap about her except one day a year- Christmas Day.
