The Hidden Loneliness Behind a Social Butterfly
Many people seem super social and happy. They appear to have big circles of friends, are always on the go, and look like they’re thriving.
But often, nothing could be further from the truth. Here are some signs that someone who seems like a social butterfly may actually be struggling with loneliness — including examples from my own life.
Some of these may hit a nerve. They certainly did for me, especially now that I’m navigating an empty nest.
BOOKS
As a kid, the library was my escape. We’d go several times a week and come home with bags of books. Even now, my iPad is overflowing with unread titles.
Sometimes diving into fictional worlds is a way to check out from reality. It offers temporary relief, but it doesn’t always fill the deeper void of loneliness.
ONLINE COMMUNITIES
Online spaces can be a safe way to connect without the risk of in-person rejection. But the absence of physical presence makes it hard to form lasting bonds. Logging off often feels like crashing back into loneliness.
