Reality Bites: The Forgotten Gen X Has Something to Say

Many of my Generation X. will remember this movie, Reality Bites, starring Winona Ryder, Ben Stiller, and 90’s heartthrob Ethan Hawke.

It was all about 20-something’s trying to make it in their lives. Whether it was jobs, relationships or just dealing with life.

We knew back in 1994 that reality bites. From Reality Bites to the birth of reality tv “The Real World”, we lived in a dual reality of 80’s decadence and the grittiness of life-changing, as it moved towards the new millennium.

I am on the end of the Gen X. spectrum born the late 1970s but this movie definitely resonated with me at the time.

We are the sandwich generation, being pulled in many different directions. Between raising a family and taking care of elderly parents, we don’t have time to sit around, thinking about how to cancel culture people or how to make McDonald’s pay a fair living wage.

Gen X. is the forgotten generation. We are generally glossed over as Boomers or out of touch. I have had to correct my college-age son that I am NOT a Boomer.
