Chris can’t deal with living with his parents. But he can’t afford to move out either. He graduated college in 2019 and has been looking for a good job ever since.

It’s been a nightmare of job interviews and dodging his parents. He’s been working at Target in the meantime. It’s a let-down after putting in over $100,000 in school loans and four years of his life.

It is honestly the perfect storm of circumstances.

Gen Z can’t get a good job + pandemic + Boomers won’t go into nursing homes= housing crisis

Just look at this:

And even worse than this, some are selling their homes to companies like Black Rock for big profits.

For the past 50-plus years, anyone living with their parents over the age of 25. was a loser. Right? Even though many cultures, like Italian, encourage their kids to live at home. My dad lived at home until he was 30.

But since the 1960s, it’s been looked down on. When dating someone, one of the first questions is “where do you live?”. No one wants to answer “at home with my parents.”

Now it’s 2022 and this trend of living at home is no longer for “losers”. Rents are skyrocketing, Boomers are not moving on from their homes and many jobs aren’t paying a living wage.

My husband and I are Gen X. We lucked out getting our home in 2001.

Our home is old now and needs a lot of updates. Can we afford it? No. We try to avoid debt, so we need to save up our money to redo the bathroom. Will that take a long time? Yes. It already has. Our bathroom has needed a new floor and paint since 2019.

Other friends and family in my circle have been able to get homes too. They are lucky too…
