Dearest,

Sometimes a visual representation is the best way to see how things change.

When you see the differences between these two maps you will understand.

This is Town A circa 2019. I have included descriptions of the businesses and as much information as I could glean. Some from public sources, some from citizens. Some from first-hand experience.

This is a representation of a common small midwest town:

Pretty standard right? You have your (from left to right):

  • school
  • bus stop
  • doctor’s office
  • church
  • dentist
  • fast food place
  • fire station
  • barber
  • vet
  • police
  • library
  • grocery store
  • fast food
  • Goodwill
  • Lake Winnie (local fishing and swimming hole)
  • YMCA
  • church
  • diner
  • antiques
  • school
  • pizza place
  • mechanic

All are very needed services, right? Ok, no one needs fast food or pizza but life is nicer in 2022 with it.

Now, this is Town A 10 years later, in 2029. When I visited again, it had turned into this (X does not mark the spot, but marks what has ceased to be).

Now I will explain what happened. As this transpired over a 10-year time period, it was a gentle kind of a shock to the residents. This is a small town that has not seen much change in 50 years. It’s the type of town that complains about road construction and the new round-about. They are very old school and 1950s…
