How Pretty Privilege and Luck Take Jobs Away From The Rest of Us

In my former life, I was an influencer for almost 20 years. The first website I built was in 2003. I was ahead of the curve.

And what a wild ride it was. The money, the perks, the freebies. I would be sent boxes of free stuff from Proctor and Gamble, given gift cards to try new restaurants, free tickets to shows, and free hotel rooms. At first, everyone had an even playing field. Overweight moms, perfect moms, and shy moms all had the same chance of getting work.

And then in moved the mommy blogging era of 2010. And these younger moms were better at producing videos and curating a perfect online lifestyle.

Many of the Gen X moms who trailblazed the way for the younger moms lost work. The smirky Millennial moms chalked up their success to HARD WORK.

I’m sure on some level, going to expensive blogging conferences and having your mom raise your kids was hard work. I’m sure being a perfect blonde, thin with 2.5 kids and a gigantic house was HARD WORK.

But I wanted to make the case that it was not only hard work.

One of these perfect influencer moms, who has since aged out (in her 40’s now), was bragging one day in the influencer Facebook group that she snagged another client.
