4-Day Christmas Holidays With the In-Laws? No Thanks.

Okay, this needs to be addressed. The holidays are around the corner, and with them, a lot of stress. When someone marries into a family, the new family does not own them. This goes for either a daughter-in-law or a son-in-law.

I am lucky not to have to deal with 4-day holiday trips with my in-laws. We are not in that tax bracket to afford that. However, my mother-in-law insists on church Christmas Eve and dinner and then visiting our home on Christmas Day.

I know she did not like having to give up Christmas Day. But once my son was born over 20 years ago, the holiday went to us.

And now, there is a new in-law with a big family. I have said over and over to mother in law that this new girl, soon-to-be daughter-in-law, is going to have her own traditions with her family.

Both of her parents are alive, unlike my family. She lives in the same town as them as well.

I have told my mother-in-law (MIL) that the new girl in the family is going to miss the holidays. But so far, the new daughter-in-law (DIL) has strangely had her mom move their holidays to different days, to accommodate mother-in-law.

She did this last year to my complete surprise. And I was like, wtf. New DIL is very close to her parents and her mom is a fantastic…
